Dogs and cats can carry several intestinal parasites. Some of those are transmissible to humans (especially children and immune-compromised adults). A parasite that dogs and cats are both susceptible to but that is not transmitted to humans is the heartworm. Heartworms are transmitted through mosquito bites, therefore all cats and dogs (even those who are 100% indoors) are at risk. There are many products on the market to prevent heartworm infections. All must be purchased through veterinarians and most also control those intestinal parasites that we can get from our pets.

Which products do you recommend for cats?

At Austin Vet Care at Metric, we recommend Revolution for cats. It is a monthly topical medication that controls hookworms, roundworms, ear mites, fleas, and heartworms.

Which products do you recommend for dogs?

For dogs, we offer products depending on what your dog’s needs are, including:

Simparica Trio is a chewable tablet that is given once a month. It protects against heartworm, five types of ticks, fleas, roundworms, and hookworms.

ProHeart6 is an injectable heartworm prevention that lasts for 6 months. It also controls hookworms.

ProHeart12 is an injectable heartworm prevention that lasts for 12 months. It also controls hookworms.

ProHeart is great for dogs whose owners have a hard time remembering to give prevention every month!

Heartgard is a seemingly yummy (very few dogs turn it down) chewable tablet that is given once a month. In addition to heartworms, it controls hookworms and roundworms.

Intestinal Parasite Prevention

Although the most common intestinal parasites are controlled with monthly prevention, there are some (such as Giardia and Coccidia) that are not. This is the reason we recommend fecal examinations every 6 months.

Flea and Tick Control

Dogs and cats can also suffer from fleas and ticks. Luckily, in general, there is not a huge tick problem in the Austin area (although there are some pockets with huge tick numbers). Fleas, on the other hand, are everywhere. Fleas can cause flea allergic dermatitis, spread tapeworms, and are just annoying to our pets. Ticks can carry several diseases that can cause serious health problems. Trifexis and Revolution also control fleas. If your pet is not on either of these, Comfortis (oral) or Activyl (topical) are options for controlling fleas. Activyl for dogs also controls ticks. Cats rarely have tick issues because they groom so much.
